Agencies using Lexipol’s Custody Daily Training Bulletin (DTB) program had access to 240 unique corrections officer training bulletins last year, covering topics ranging from inmate safety checks to sanitation inspections.
A new report from Lexipol provides details into the topics covered in the training program, which is available to all Lexipol Custody client agencies. DTBs use a proven system of realistic and verifiable training to expose corrections officers to an agency’s policies and help them apply policy to real-world situations.
Inmate Management topped the list of topics in 2016, accounting for 25% of the total DTBs. This category covers subtopics such as Juvenile Housing, Inmate Classification, Inmate Safety Checks, and Special Management Inmates.
Not surprisingly, the second highest category was Organization and Administration, covering topics ranging from Report Preparation to Fitness for Duty. Inmate Due Process was a close third at 15% of total DTBs.
The following chart shows the breakdown of main topics:
“The DTBs correspond with the topics covered in the Lexipol Custody Policy Manual,” says Don Weaver, Training Director for Lexipol. “In 2016 our goal was to cover each chapter from the policy manual, and then to focus additional training in areas where we believe the most risk exists to correctional officers and agencies, such as complying with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).”
Lexipol’s Training team also monitors court cases, emerging trends and current events, and builds DTBs to address them. Some of these topics in 2016 included:
• Mentally ill inmates
• Isolation/restrictive housing
• Suicide prevention
• Use of force
• Social media
