TASERs, Emergency Response Top Lexipol’s 2017 Law Enforcement Training Topics

The use of conducted energy devices/TASERs topped the list of training topics covered in Lexipol’s Daily Training Bulletin (DTB) program in 2017. Officer response to emergency calls and the use of department computers, email and MDTs were also highly represented.

Agencies using Lexipol’s Daily Training Bulletin (DTB) program had access to 360 unique law enforcement training bulletins last year, providing a total of 12 hours of training. Many states provide POST credit for completion of the DTBs.

The 2017 summary report from Lexipol provides details into the topics covered in the training program, which is available to all Lexipol customers. DTBs use a proven system of realistic and verifiable training to expose officers to an agency’s policies and help them apply policy to real-world situations.

The report breaks down the DTBs into main categories and subtopics. Field Investigations topped the list of main categories in 2017, accounting for 27% of the total DTBs. This category covers subtopics such as Crisis Intervention, Report Preparation, Homeless Investigations and Crime Scenes.

Not surprisingly, the second highest category was Personnel, covering topics ranging from Policy/Directives to Media Relations. Firearms and Control Devices was the third highest category at 9%, followed by Vehicle Operations at 8%. The following chart shows the breakdown of main topics:

“DTBs are designed not only to cover the topics in the Lexipol Law Enforcement Policy Manual, but also to show how those topics apply to actual situations officers face,” says Don Weaver, Training Director for Lexipol. “DTBs are a quick, effective way for agencies to provide officers with training on high-risk, low-frequency areas.”

One of those areas is use of force. Leixpol issued 25 DTBs covering aspects of the Use of Force Policy in 2017, including nine that focused on the critical area of reasonableness of force, as outlined in Graham v. Connor. The DTB program also takes into consideration current events and emerging trends. Weaver says that in 2017, training bulletins covered issues such as body cameras, community/police relations and immigration violations. To access the complete listing of 2017 topics, click here.
