Today, I want to talk to my public safety friends who are considering the use of unmanned aircraft systems. Drones are becoming common in public safety operations. They are relatively inexpensive and can offer many benefits. But they are not without risk. If your agency is considering such a program, here a couple of things to think about.

Drones are accompanied by complicated regulations and issues. As you implement your program, give it sufficient thought, a lot of research, and careful planning.

First, you need to know that drone use by your agency is regulated by the FAA. Only agencies and personnel that meet FAA requirements should operate these systems. The FAA has specific safety regulations regarding where and when drones can be operated. Obviously, the last thing we want to do is create a public safety issue.

Another concern about the use of drones in law enforcement relates to flying above areas where an expectation of privacy may exist. The law varies so you need to work with your legal counsel and prosecutors.

It’s important to maintain control of the drone’s camera. Especially over sensitive areas. Even if you’re not directly over an area where an expectation of privacy exists.

And finally, the enhancement of senses applies to drones just as they do for an officer on the street. Remember, if you can’t do something while standing on the ground, it’s unlikely you can get away with it while using a drone.

And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
