Today’s tip is for law enforcement officers and it deals with wearing your high-visibility safety vests.
Whether blue, green, brown, or black, many law enforcement uniforms are dark in color. This makes it difficult to see us in the dark. While this might improve our safety in some tactical situations it also makes it more dangerous when we are working near traffic.
Most of you have been provided with a high-visibility safety vest by your agency. That is because the federal government requires it. If you don’t have one, get one.
Officers are struck by passing vehicles each year. Many are injured. Too many are killed. Sometimes this happens while officers are working a crash or directing traffic.
Wear your vest anytime increased visibility would improve your safety. This includes when you are working near passing traffic at crash scenes.
If you don’t have time to put it on when you first arrive, go back and get it as soon as you can.
Supervisors, train your officers about when they are required to wear their vests. Then follow up to make sure they are actually wearing them.
Wear your high-visibility vest to help people see you and to help you stay safe.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
