Housekeeping – Keep the Department Clean

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol and today’s tip deals with housekeeping. Yes, housekeeping. As in, cleaning and tidying up.

Take pride in the appearance of your workspace.

I’ve talked before about evidence room housekeeping. But some of you want to talk about housekeeping in general.

How much time do you spend in the police station, firehouse, or jail every day? In some sense, your workplace is your home away from home.

When you see a scrap of paper on the floor, do you pick it up? When you see a drawer or cabinet open, do you close it? When you notice the paper towel dispenser is empty, do you fill it? When you see a sticky drop on the table or a spill on the floor, do you wipe it up? I hope so.

If you wouldn’t let these little issues go unaddressed in your own home, don’t allow them at work. Take pride in the appearance of your workspace. This means you have to pick up after yourself. It also means you might have to pick up after others sometimes too.

Maybe you’re OK with working in messy chaos. And maybe it’s tempting to leave your workplace dirty. Please be considerate of those around you and remember that you’re not the only one who has to see it.

The environment we work in can affect productivity and attitude. Please do your part to keep your workplace clean and presentable for everyone.

And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
