Lady Justice Is Blind: Law Enforcement Officers Must Enforce the Law Equally

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for law enforcement and it deals with the blindfold on Lady Justice.

When people believe that government officials are above the law, trust in the system erodes.

The blindfold worn by Lady Justice represents impartiality. It’s the idea that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of status, wealth, power, or identity.  

When people believe that government officials are above the law, trust in the system erodes. We can’t completely fix this perception, but we can do our part.  

Law enforcement is among the most visible representatives of the government. Officers are often seen as the gatekeepers of the criminal justice system. We are the first to contact those who violate the law. We must use our discretion wisely and enforce the law impartially. It’s the right thing to do. 

Have you ever been placed in a bad situation by a fellow officer or other public officials who were driving drunk? If you allow the person to drive away someone could be hurt or killed. Even if no one is hurt, there could still be trouble. The person may brag that he was “cut a break.” A recording or other information could surface showing that you failed to take appropriate action.  

Be a professional. Act in an impartial and ethical manner. Remember the blindfold on Lady Justice.
