Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for Corrections ad Law Enforcement.

Where can we find lots of people with substance abuse problems? Your jail or temporary holding facility.

Today’s Tip is for Corrections and Law Enforcement Officers and the tip is to get Narcan and make sure it is available in the booking area.

It’s no secret that we have an opioid crisis in our country. The dangers of opioid-based drugs are well known and make headlines every day. Here’s a question for you. Other than in hospitals or treatment centers, where can we find lots of people with substance abuse problems? Your jail or temporary holding facility. That’s where.

Sometimes people swallow drug evidence. Even with the risks involved, they would rather ingest the evidence than get caught with it. Eventually, these people end up in jail or in a temporary holding facility. And let’s face it folks, not many will admit that they’ve potentially overdosed to hide their stash.

Unlike alcohol, it isn’t easy to test for opioid impairment. Urine tests are the easiest and most accurate, but they may be intrusive or impractical. That leaves us to rely on our powers of observation. We need to have a plan in place for when, not if, we encounter someone who has overdosed in the booking or holding areas.

Opioid overdose can be sudden and serious. A person can be standing and talking one minute and, on the floor, not breathing the next. Narcan is one of the only ways to quickly and safely reverse the effects of opioid overdose. UsinNarcan will likely save the person’s life. Be prepared and save lives. Make the investment in Narcan and get your people trained on how to use it.

And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham signing off.
