Personal Disaster Preparation for Public Safety Personnel
Category: Public Safety
Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s tip is for everyone and it is about being prepared. After all, those thousands of girl and boy scouts can’t be wrong.
Personal emergency preparedness should be a part of every public safety professional’s routine.
One thing we’ll never be able to control is the weather. Hurricanes on the east coast, earthquakes on the west coast, and plenty of tornadoes, blizzards, or other calamities in between. As first responders, we will always be relied upon to respond when nature wreaks havoc.
Most of our agencies have detailed response plans for natural disasters and weather-related emergencies. Do you have your own personal preparedness plan? If not, you should.
You can start with something as simple as storing personal emergency supplies in your personal vehicle and in your locker at work. A first aid kit, some non-perishable food, bottled water, a spare flashlight, batteries, and a blanket are some of the things that would come in handy. You should also include other items that you would need if were stuck in your car or at work for an extended period of time.
We never know when bad things are going to happen but we do know that we’ll be relied called upon to be part of the solution. We do not want to be part of the problem. If we can’t take care of ourselves, we will have a hard time helping others.
Personal emergency preparedness should be a part of every public safety professional’s routine.
That’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
