Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s tip is for all my friends in corrections who are looking to be promoted.

Preparing for a promotion in corrections isn’t about hoping for the best. It’s about taking deliberate, strategic steps to ensure you’re the best candidate for the job. Let’s dive into some ways you can establish value as a leadership candidate.

First, build a solid track record. It’s very important to demonstrate your reliability and competence in your current role. Show up on time, follow policies and procedures meticulously, and maintain a positive attitude. Supervisors notice those who perform well consistently over those who only shine occasionally.

“Being a leader isn’t just about giving orders. It’s about inspiring and guiding your team.”

A recent article I read mentioned that professional growth in corrections hinges on four key elements: formal education, specialized training, certifications, and on-the-job learning. You must be proactive in pursuing education and training opportunities if you want to stand out. This could mean enrolling in college courses, attending specialized training, or earning certifications that add value to your skill sets.

Next, develop leadership skills. Being a leader isn’t just about giving orders. It’s about inspiring and guiding your team. Take advantage of any leadership training programs available to you. Consider volunteering for projects that allow you to take on more responsibility and showcase your leadership capabilities.

Always network and seek mentorship. Don’t underestimate the power of connections. Building positive relationships allows you to seek out mentors who can provide guidance and advice, while advocating for you when opportunities arise. And, if you’ve been passed over for a promotion, don’t be discouraged. Reflect on the feedback provided and use it as a learning experience. Identify areas for improvement and work on them diligently.

Finally, prepare thoroughly for your interview. Research common interview questions for the position and practice your responses. Be ready to discuss your accomplishments – how you’ve handled challenges, and why YOU are the right person for the position.

And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
