Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for my friends in the fire service, and it focuses on a critical aspect of firefighter readiness: avoiding the pitfalls of outdated practices. This is also known as “getting stuck in the Stone Age.”
In the fire service, we must ensure our firefighting techniques and strategies remain cutting-edge and effective. Here’s how to stay ahead.
Continuous training and education are paramount. The fire service frequently evolves with new techniques and tools. Regular training keeps firefighters familiar with advancements, from new firefighting methods to improved PPE. So number one, prioritize ongoing training.
Second, embrace technology. Modern equipment including drones, thermal imaging cameras, and advanced communication systems enhance safety and efficiency. Proficiency in using these tools is essential. It’s not enough just to purchase them. Regular drills and hands-on experience ensure competence.
“Being prepared for tomorrow means embracing change today.”
Effective communication is also crucial. Clear, concise communication can make the difference in an emergency. But protocols change – just think about active shooter response or how ventilation and door control have evolved. Make sure you’re practicing new communication tactics so they are second nature during emergencies.
What else can you do to keep up? Here’s where leadership is vital. Encourage critical and creative thinking. Be open to new ideas. Question traditional methods. An environment where team members can suggest improvements leads to better solutions. Are you developing leaders who build these environments?
Finally, learn from what worked and what didn’t. After-action reviews and debriefs are crucial. Continuous, honest evaluation ensures practices evolve to meet new challenges.
The fire service loves tradition, and for good reason. But being prepared for tomorrow means embracing change today. So ask yourself, what are you doing to avoid getting stuck in the Stone Age?
That’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
