Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s message is for all my friends in corrections. I want to discuss a topic all correctional facilities need to address. And that’s managing transgender inmates.
Transgender inmates face unique challenges and vulnerabilities. Careful consideration must be given when making classification, housing, work, and program assignments for these inmates.
“Managing transgender inmates effectively requires a balanced approach between their well-being and maintaining the safety and security of your facility.”
One concern for transgender inmates is their housing placement within the facility. Traditionally, inmates were housed based on their assigned sex at birth. But for transgender inmates, this practice can increase the risk of assault and abuse by other inmates.
The Prison Rape Elimination Act, or PREA, requires that transgender inmate housing and program assignments include individualized consideration for their health and safety. This includes any related supervisory or facility concerns. You must also consider the inmate’s own opinion of their safety.
Search procedures also require careful evaluation. If you know an inmate is transgender, pat-down searches should be conducted by staff of the same gender with which the inmate identifies, if possible. This simple adjustment can significantly reduce the emotional distress experienced by the inmate, and foster a more respectful and humane environment.
Access to health care, including mental health screening, is equally essential. Transgender inmates often experience higher rates of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. They also have a higher risk of self-harm and suicide. Comprehensive screening and appropriate medical and mental health care are vital components of their overall treatment plan.
Managing transgender inmates effectively requires a balanced approach between their well-being and maintaining the safety and security of your facility.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
