On July 4, 2022, seven people were killed and 48 injured at a mass shooting during a parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Although many members of the fire department were off duty marching in the parade, they sprang into action. More than 30 members ran toward the shots, treated victims at the scene and transported patients. Their actions saved lives, but they were also changed forever by the violence and trauma they experienced.

Join Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage in conversation with Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder to learn how his department responded to this incident, changes they’ve made as a result, and how they are helping personnel and the community recover.

You’ll learn:

  • How the increase in active shooter incidents is changing the role and training requirements of firefighters.
  • Strategies for coordinated fire/police/dispatch response during active shooter incidents.
  • How trust between supervisors and line personnel can help them prepare for and bounce back from critical incidents.
  • Key steps to take to support personnel following a critical incident.
