Law enforcement officers are routinely exposed to highly stressful and potentially traumatizing events that can have lasting effects on their mental health. Unfortunately, the stigma of seeking mental health treatment among police and public safety personnel remains strong. Moreover, the prospect of talking to a therapist often conjures up fears of being evaluated by someone who doesn’t understand the job.

Some agencies are fighting this stigma with a new program: mandatory annual mental wellness visits. Creating a dedicated time for officers to connect with a mental health provider—separate from a specific incident or return-to-duty protocol—can equip officers with tools to manage their response to traumatic experiences as well as increase their resiliency. These programs also build officer trust in the counseling process. Join us to learn more about this innovative approach.

You’ll learn:

  • What a mental wellness visit is and isn’t.

  • How mental wellness visits differ from return-to-duty psychological assessments.

  • Therapist qualifications essential to make a mental wellness visit program gain the trust of officers.

  • How to develop a program and logistical considerations to ensure successful implementation.
