Gender Equity in the Firehouse

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for my friends in the fire service, and it’s about gender equity.

I’ve been around the block more than a few times over the course of my career, and I’ve seen my fair share of agencies where a boys’ club mentality persists. That’s a losing proposition for the members, the department, the community, and the fire service as a whole.

It’s up to you, the members of the fire service, to build a culture that reflects the diversity and strength of the communities we serve.

First things first, let’s dispel the myth that firefighting is a man’s job. Women have been proving themselves on the front lines for decades, demonstrating the same courage, skill, and dedication as their male counterparts. So why are they still being treated like second-class citizens in some firehouses?

This lack of respect is unacceptable, plain and simple. Too often, the contributions of female firefighters have been overlooked and undervalued. And it’s not just unfair — it’s downright dangerous. We need every able-bodied firefighter we can get, regardless of gender, race, or background.

But it’s not just about recruiting more women into the fire service — it’s about creating an environment where they can thrive. That means zero tolerance for harassment or discrimination of any kind. It means providing equal opportunities for training, advancement, and leadership positions. And it means fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity where every firefighter is valued and supported.

I know change isn’t easy. Some will resist, clinging to the outdated notion that firefighting is a man’s world. But progress waits for no one — man or woman. The fire service is evolving, and those who refuse to evolve with it will be left behind.

Achieving gender equity in the firehouse requires participation from everybody. Firefighting isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. And it’s up to you, the members of the fire service, to build a culture that reflects the diversity and strength of the communities we serve.

And that’s today’s tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
