“Catch Cops Doing It Right” – Why We Need to Recognize Positive Performance

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today, I’d like to talk about something we often overlook in law enforcement: Recognizing positive performance.

Ladies and gentlemen, we spend a lot of time focusing on mistakes, violations, and deficiencies. While this is important for maintaining high standards and accountability, it’s equally important to acknowledge and celebrate when our officers perform well. In other words, sometimes we need to catch our people doing things right.

“Make it a point today to catch someone doing something right. Whether it’s a simple thank you or a formal commendation, your acknowledgment can make a difference.”

Why is this so critical? Let’s break it down.

First, positive reinforcement is a powerful tool. Recognizing efforts like de-escalating volatile situations, showing empathy to victims, or demonstrating exceptional teamwork reinforces good behaviors. This increases the likelihood of these actions being repeated in the future, not only by those we single out, but also by their peers.

Second, recognizing positive performance can boost morale. Policing can be tough, and our officers face immense pressure every single day. When leaders take the time to commend good work, it sends a clear message that these efforts are noticed and appreciated. This can reduce burnout and improve job satisfaction, enhancing the effectiveness of your agency.

Third, public perception matters. Our communities are watching, and they tend to hear more about our failures than our successes. By actively promoting and celebrating the good work our officers do, we build trust and strengthen community relations. This transparency and positivity can help shore up mutual respect and support between the police and the public.

Finally, let’s not forget the concept of fairness. If we’re quick to criticize when things go wrong, we must be equally swift to praise when things go right. This balanced approach not only fosters a healthier work environment but also builds a culture of continuous improvement.

Make it a point today to catch someone doing something right. Whether it’s a simple thank you or a formal commendation, your acknowledgment can make a difference.

And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
