Use of Force, Searches Among Top Corrections Training Topics in 2021

By Lexipol Team

Use of force was the top training topic for correctional officers in Lexipol’s Daily Training Bulletin (DTB) program in 2021, closely followed by searches and facility emergencies. Other key training topics included:

  • Inmate Discipline
  • Rules of Conduct
  • Inmate Hygiene
  • Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)
  • Inmate Programs & Services
  • Speech, Expression & Social Networking

The top training category, accounting for almost 25% of DTB training hours, was once again inmate management. As one of the biggest and most complex responsibilities of correctional officers, it requires significant and consistent training to ensure full understanding of and compliance with policies and procedures. In 2021, Lexipol’s Daily Training Bulletin (DTB) program covered these topics with short, scenario-based training modules designed to help correctional staff prepare for a wide variety of inmate management situations, including special management inmates, staff and inmate contact, and use of restraints.

Agencies using the DTB program had access to 240 unique corrections training bulletins last year. The 2021 summary report organizes the training topics into nine categories and 80 topics. While the Inmate Management category topped the list, other key categories included Role and Authority/Organization and Administration, Inmate Due Process and Inmate Programs.
