Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today I want to focus on a topic that’s incredibly important for all my public safety friends out there: working during severe storms.
Whether it’s high winds, heavy snow, torrential rain, or lightning, while most folks are hunkering down, first responders are gearing up and heading out. But as we all know, working in these conditions creates significant risks.
“Your safety is paramount. Yes, your goal is to protect life and property, but this must be balanced against your own safety and that of your team.”
First, let’s talk about preparation. Before storm seasons hit, every agency should review severe weather procedures. This includes ensuring all equipment is storm-ready and that your response plan accounts for the unique challenges of stormy conditions. This could mean dealing with fallen trees, flooded or snow-covered roads, or power outages.
Now let’s discuss response. When you’re responding to an emergency during a storm, the approach is everything. High winds and reduced visibility mean driving requires extra caution. Road conditions can deteriorate quickly, so maintaining control and safe speeds are paramount.
Once on-scene, situational awareness is also key. Always assume downed power lines are live. When dealing with flooding, remember that water conducts electricity and can hide all sorts of hazards. As I always say, predictable is preventable, so knowing the hazards in your area will serve you well.
Perhaps most importantly, effective communication during a storm is essential. Keep lines open with your team and command center to relay critical information and receive updates. Coordination with other emergency services can make the difference between a successful response and a catastrophic one.
Finally, remember self-care. Working in storm conditions can be physically exhausting and mentally draining. Take the necessary steps to stay hydrated, fueled, and mentally prepared for extended operations.
Remember, folks: Your safety is paramount. Yes, your goal is to protect life and property, but this must be balanced against your own safety and that of your team. Thank you for your dedication, and stay safe out there.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham, signing off.
