Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for all my friends in law enforcement, and I’d like to talk to you about the state of your medical kit.
Are you prepared for an on-duty medical emergency? You probably have a medical kit in your patrol vehicle. Is it buried behind the spare tire or underneath your rain gear? How fast could you access it in an emergency?
The next time you conduct a pre-shift equipment check, pull out that medical kit. Open it and take a good look at the contents. If all you see are bandages and an antiseptic, you should be alarmed.
Even the most basic medical kit should contain several pairs of nitrile gloves, tourniquets, trauma dressings, and rolls of gauze. And don’t forget a CPR mask. If you’re not sure what to include, a simple online search will give you plenty of ideas.
Let’s not stop with inventory. What condition are your medical supplies in? Are they clean and sealed? Are any of the contents expired? Check expiration dates and make sure to store supplies at the appropriate temperature.
Do you carry naloxone? Opioid-based substances such as fentanyl pose a serious risk of accidental exposure and overdose to users and first responders alike. Naloxone that’s properly stored and easily accessed can be the difference between life and death.
And it goes without saying that first aid and CPR training are essential. Are your certifications current? A great medical kit is of little value without the necessary skills and training.
Your medical kit can be used to treat members of your community. But it might also help you or a coworker. Keep it where you can grab it quickly, keep it well stocked, and make sure you know how to properly use its contents. Be prepared.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
