Public Recording of Law Enforcement
Category: Law Enforcement
Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol.
Today’s Tip is for all public safety professionals, but especially for law enforcement. I want to talk to you about cameras. They’re everywhere. People are recording everything. Everyone has a camera literally at their fingertips.
Make it your personal goal to star in the next video as the model of professional policing.
You know by now that the public has the right to record us. It can seem like everyone around is pulling out their phones and recording every time they see us doing our jobs. I know it can sometimes be a distraction. And I know that it might be uncomfortable. But this is the reality of the world we live in. If you haven’t already, it’s time for you to just embrace it.
We have always known that the eyes of the public are upon us. It has always been that way, but not in the same way. Before video cameras were common only a handful of people could see an incident unfold. Before the internet, the whole world would see an incident only if the video was distributed by mass media. But in today’s world, any video can go viral on social media. Millions and millions around the world can see it. How do you want yourself or your agency represented?
Use this reality to your advantage. Operate like you are being recorded. Do the good work you always do. Be professional. Be courteous. Make it your personal goal to star in the next video as the model of professional policing.
And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
