Don’t Stack Charges Just Because You’re Angry

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for my friends in law enforcement. Well, this is more of a warning, and it’s a simple one. Don’t stack charges just because you’re angry.

“Whoa Gordon, why would I do that? After all, I’m sworn to uphold the Constitution and I can recite the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics in my sleep.”

I get it. But hey, we’re all human. That means we may act emotionally or out of anger.

Learn to control your anger and do the right thing.

Picture this. You’re on patrol and stop someone for speeding. You approach the driver, who’s already got his head halfway out the window, demanding to know why you stopped him. You respond calmly and professionally, but the motorist starts to rant about how he pays your salary and how he’s going to have your badge. We’ve all heard it, but today’s not a good day. Maybe your rent’s gone up or your dog just died. And this guy’s really pushing your buttons.

Now you’re angry. Back at your patrol vehicle, you start writing a citation. Before long, you’re handing him a speeding ticket AND tagging him for an assortment of minor violations. You feel vindicated as the even angrier motorist drives off.

Folks, don’t compromise your integrity or risk your agency’s reputation in exchange for a moment of emotional satisfaction. While the public has a right to lawfully express their anger toward law enforcement, you’re held to a higher standard.

Stacking charges just because you’re angry isn’t ethical. It goes against the principles of our profession. Learn to control your anger and do the right thing. Remember, warnings can be just as effective as citations, even in situations where you’re dealing with an argumentative motorist. Keep your emotions in check and always take the high road.

And that is Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham signing off.
