Pursuit Policy, OIS Investigations Top List of 2021 Law Enforcement Training Topics

Vehicle pursuit policy topped the list of law enforcement training topics in Lexipol’s Daily Training Bulletin (DTB) program in 2021, followed closely by officer-involved shooting (OIS) investigations, debriefings and reviews. Other frequent training topics included:

  • Force Reporting/Supervisor Response
  • Training/Field Training Officer Program
  • Conducted Energy Device/TASER
  • Duty to Intercede & Report
  • Injury/Illness Prevention/PPE

The top training category with almost four cumulative hours of training in 2021 was once again Field Investigations, which covers everything from community policing and freedom of speech to bias and public recording of law enforcement officers.

DTBs are often developed to reflect current events and trends, providing training relevant to the challenges faced by law enforcement officers throughout the year. In 2021, scenarios based on media accounts and court decisions were used to create bulletins to train officers to effectively interpret and apply policy. Agencies using Lexipol’s Daily Training Bulletin program had access to 365 unique law enforcement training bulletins, providing a total of more than 12 hours of training over the course of the year. Many states also provide POST credit for completion of the DTBs.

The 2021 summary report from Lexipol organizes training topics into 14 main categories and over 150 subtopics. While the Field Investigations category topped the list, other key categories included Personnel, Vehicle Operations and Use of Force Policy.
