Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. And Today’s Tip deals with ethical behavior in a jail environment.

Unfortunately, there are a number of situations in the jail that may give rise to unethical practices.

corrections officer is a position of public faith and trust. We are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards to promote professionalism, gain public support, earn the trust and respect of our peers and maintain a sense of self-worth.

Unfortunately, there are a number of situations in the jail that may give rise to unethical practices. They include, but are not limited to:

  • The use of profane language
  • Harassment of inmates or staff
  • Covering up for another’s misdeeds
  • Fraternization with inmates
  • Making derogatory remarks
  • Accepting bribes or gratuities
  • Sleeping on the job
  • Doing favors for inmates, and
  • Falsifying a report or lying

Some remedial methods for addressing unethical behavior in the jail may include:

  • Expressing disapproval of minor infractions by co-workers
  • Discussing infractions by co-workers with a supervisor
  • Reporting misconduct or unethical behavior to a supervisor

It is important to take positive and immediate steps when becoming aware of unethical behavior to maintain public trust, prevent further misconduct and permit corrective action to occur.

Remember, predictable is preventable.

And that is Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Gordon Graham signing off.
